# Promo codes (/en/businesses/promo-codes)

Promo codes are a powerful way to attract new players, reward loyal customers, and run seasonal or flash campaigns. With Thril’s promo code tool, you can set up custom discounts that apply automatically during checkout, giving you complete control over your marketing incentives.

## 🧭 Where to Manage Promo Codes [#-where-to-manage-promo-codes]

To get started, go to **Settings → Promo codes** in your venue dashboard.

This view shows all your current codes, their statuses, usage numbers, and active periods. From here, click **New promo code** to launch a new campaign.

***

## ✍️ Step 1: Basic Details [#️-step-1-basic-details]

Begin by entering the following:

* **Name**: Internal name for your reference (shown in reports).
* **Code**: The code customers will enter at checkout (e.g., `SUMMER25`). It’s auto-formatted to uppercase and must be unique.
* **Active period**: Set the start and end dates. The code becomes available starting at midnight on the start date.
* **Additional details**: Optional notes visible only to you and your staff.

Once filled in, click **Next step**.

## ⚙️ Step 2: Configuration [#️-step-2-configuration]

Here, you can define who can use the code and how often:

* **Who can use the code**: Leave it at *Every customer*, or pick a customer list. Only the customers on the list can then use the code. A dynamic list is copied as it is when you save, so later changes to its filters don't change who can use the code.
* **Maximum total uses**: The cap across all customers (e.g., "first 50 uses"). Leave empty for no limit.
* **Maximum uses per customer**: How many times one customer can use the code. Leave empty for no limit.
* **Limit usage based on customer history** (optional): Turn on **Check reservation history**, **Check event history** or both, and set **Maximum number of historical activities**. With 0, only customers with no earlier reservations or events can use the code.

Continue by clicking **Next step**.

## 🧩 Step 3: Add Benefits [#-step-3-add-benefits]

Now you can define what the code actually does. Each promo code can have one or more benefits. Click **Add benefit** and pick what the benefit discounts:

* **Reservations**: **Reservation discount** or **Reservation custom pricing**
* **Events**: **Event discount**
* **Courses**: **Course discount**
* **Services**: **Service discount**
* **Memberships**: **Membership discount**
* **Session cards**: **Session card discount**
* **Products**: **Product discount**
* **Leagues**: **League discount**

The list groups the benefits by what they discount.

### Reservation discount [#reservation-discount]

* **Benefit name**: Clearly describe what the customer gets (e.g., “10% discount”).
* **Discount type**:
  * *Percentage* (e.g., 15% off)
  * *Fixed amount* (e.g., 5€ off)
* **Discount value**: Enter the percentage or fixed value.
* **Reservation restrictions** (optional): Target specific sports, resources, days, time slots, or durations.

### Event discount and course discount [#event-discount-and-course-discount]

An event discount covers events, series and tournaments. A course discount covers course enrollments.

* **Benefit name**: Clearly describe what the customer gets.
* **Discount type**:
  * *Percentage* (e.g., 20% off)
  * *Amount off* (e.g., 5€ off)
  * *Fixed price*: the price the customer pays (e.g., 15€). An event or course that already costs this much or less gets no discount.
* **Which events does this discount apply to?**:
  * *All events*: every event and tournament at the venue.
  * *Events that match rules*: one or more rules, such as a kind of event, a sport, a category, a price range, days, times or a date range. An event only has to match one rule.
  * *Only events I pick*: named events, series and tournaments. Picking a series covers the occurrences it adds later.
* **Exclusions** (optional): events that never get this discount, even when a rule matches them.

A course discount picks courses the same way, with **Which courses does this discount apply to?**. You can pick a whole course or single groups of it.

Open **Matching events** (or **Matching courses**) to see the upcoming items with their list price, the discount and what the customer pays. You can exclude an item from its row.

### Membership, session card, product and league discounts [#membership-session-card-product-and-league-discounts]

These benefits work like event and course discounts: a discount type, a choice of what the discount applies to, and optional exclusions.

* **Memberships**, **session cards** and **leagues**: *All* of them at the venue, or *only the ones you pick*. In a league you can pick the whole league or single classes.
* **Products**: *All products* covers every shop product, rental and additional service. *Products that match rules* matches by **Sold as** (shop product, rental or additional service) and **Price range**. *Only products I pick* covers the named products with every variant.

An amount off or a fixed price applies to each item. A customer who buys three cans of balls gets the discount three times. The price range compares the list price of one item.

A membership discount only covers a customer's first payment for a membership they have not held before. When the membership has an intro price, the customer gets the intro price and not the code's discount.

The customer enters the code at checkout on the web or in the app. A cashier can also enter it in POS, where the code discounts the memberships, session cards, products and league registrations in the cart that its benefits cover.

When an item matches more than one benefit of the same code, a benefit that picks the item by name wins over a benefit that matches it by rule. Otherwise the customer gets the biggest discount.

### Service discount [#service-discount]

A service discount covers [service bookings](/businesses/service-bookings).

* **Benefit name**: Clearly describe what the customer gets, e.g. "Spring campaign".
* **Discount type**: *Percentage*, *Amount off* or *Fixed price*, the same as for events and courses.
* **Restrictions** (optional): limit the discount to chosen services, duration ranges, days of week, time slots or a date range. With no restrictions the discount covers every service booking.

The customer enters the code when they pay for the booking on the web or in the app. A cashier can also enter it in POS. A code cannot be entered when staff mark a booking as paid.

A matching promo code replaces the customer's membership discount on the booking, even if the membership discount is bigger. In POS the membership discount comes off first, and the code takes its discount from what is left.

You can add multiple benefits if needed. When ready, click **Create promo code**.

## 📊 Monitoring and Editing Codes [#-monitoring-and-editing-codes]

Once created, you can:

* See each code’s **usage stats**.
* Edit or delete codes at any time.
* View which benefits and users are associated with a promo.

To manage a promo, click on it from the overview list. You’ll find tabs for **Details**, **Benefits**, **Applies to**, and **Usages**. The **Applies to** tab is there when the code has an event, course, membership, session card, product or league benefit.

The **Applies to** tab lists the venue's items of each kind the code has a benefit for: upcoming events and courses, memberships, session cards, products and league classes. Each row shows the list price, the discount, and what the customer pays. Prices are for one item or participant. Filter the list by type, or search it by name. The **Reason** column names the benefit that gives the discount, or tells you why an item gets none.

The promo codes of an event, series, tournament, course, membership, session card or product are no longer set in the item's own settings. The item's details show the active codes that work there under **Promo codes that work here**.

## 💡 Tips [#-tips]

* Use short, memorable codes.
* Combine with email campaigns for better reach.
* Limit codes to weekends, off-peak hours, or specific groups to optimize pricing.
* To give chosen customers value that works only on session cards, use a session card discount with a customer list. Credits can't be limited that way. See [If you want to support session cards only](/businesses/shop/credit-products#if-you-want-to-support-session-cards-only).

Promo codes are a versatile tool to drive bookings and delight your customers without disrupting your standard pricing logic.
